When Alex McLeish took charge for the second time, it was not the most popular of choices with the fans. Things did not get much better as he lost 6 of his first 8 games. Things then took a turn as he won promotion and a Euro 2020 playoff place in the Nations League. The Euro 2020 qualification campaign began with a humiliating defeat to Kazakhstan and a poor performance against San Marino. He then left the job after 14 months by mutual consent.
