After 14 minutes Scotland almost took the lead when Oliveira almost scored an own goal. Beto had to pull off a spectacular save to push it over the bar. After 27 minutes Bruma shot just wide of the post. Naismith also headed just wide of the post from a Forrest cross. Five minutes before half time Gordon saved a close range shot from Eder. Two minutes later Hélder Costa gave Portugal the lead when he slid in a Rodrigues cross. Eight minutes into the second half Scott McKenna almost equalised when a diving header went just past the post. With 16 minutes remaining, Portugal doubled their lead when Eder headed a Sanches free-kick past Gordon. Ten minutes later Bruma got a third when he hit a powerful shot into the top right hand corner from just inside the box. In the final minute of injury time, Naismith got a consolation. He connected with a back-heel pass from Mackay-Steven and shot past Beto to make it 1-3.
