Alex McLeish's first match in his second stint was against Costa Rica. Their first meeting since the humiliating defeat at Italia '90. Costa Rica took an early lead after 14 minutes when Oviedo made a run down the left before cutting the ball back into the path of Urena in the box. He hit a low shot into the bottom right corner beating McGregor to make it 1-0. Scotland almost equalised straight away when Paterson headed a Ritchie corner past the post. McBurnie then had a shot saved. In the second half Costa Rica hit the bar, and Scotland's best chance fell to Matt Ritchie, who had a shot palmed over the bar. It was not a good start to McLeish's reign as it ended with a 1-0 defeat.
