Scotland went into their first ever UEFA Nations League match on the back of 5 defeats in six games, and only scoring 1 goal in these games. This meant that the pressure was on Alex McLeish to win this game. Midway through the firsy half, Scotland should have taken the lead when a McGinn free kick was headed across goal by Mulgrew to Naismith, who headed against the inside of the post, when he should have scored. Just before half time, Naismith had the ball in the back of the net when he deflected a McGregor shot into the net, but he was offside. Two minutes into the second half, Scotland took the lead. Robertson crossed the ball to the back post to Naismith, who headed the ball in off the defender. It was awarded as an own goal. Midway through the second half, McGregor had to pull off a low save to keep Albania from equalising. Two minutes later Scotland got a second. A corner from Scotland was headed away by the defender, for Naismith to make contact and head a loose ball into the bottom corner. Late on Scotland should have got a third, but McGregor's shot was blocked by two Albanian defenders. The game finished 2-0 for Scotland to top their group.
