Israel 2-1 Scotland

Scotland travelled to Israel as strong favourites after Israel had lost to Albania.  It was the hosts who made the strong start coming close 3 times in the first 20 minutes, needing McGregor to pull off a close save.  Midway through the first half though, Scotland were awarded a penalty when Naismith was barged over in the box.  Up stepped Charlie Mulgrew to hit the ball down the middle while the keeper dived, to make it 1-0 to Scotland.  Five minutes later John Souttar was booked for making no contact with the opponent, and this was to be costly later.  5 minutes before half time, Israel came close to equalising when a shot came off the post.  A few minutes later, McGregor had to save a long distance effort.  Six minutes into the second half, Israel got a well deserved equaliser when Peretz received a pass in the box and plucked out a low shot past McGregor. Just after the hour mark, John Souttar received a harsh second yellow, and got his marching orders.  Israel were well on top now, and hit the bar after 65 minutes, when it seemed easier to score.  With 16 minutes remaining, an Israel ball was played into the box for Kieran Tierney to slice past McGregor and make it 2-1 to Israel.  It was nothing more than they deserved.  A couple of minutes later Callum McGregor had a chance, but skyed it over the bar.  He then a shot from outside the box saved by the keeper, while McGregor made a similar save at the other end.  Israel ran out deserved victors and Scotland were lucky it was not by more, in a game that many said was the worst Scotland performance of all time.  Alex McLeish was only holding on to his job by a thread after this game.
