The Brazilian Independence Cup was a tournament held in Brazil to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Brazil's Independence from Portugal. It consisted of 18 countries (and two continental teams), who took part in two group rounds before the winners of each group played in the final. Scotland started in the final round.
Brazil beat Portugal, who won Group B, 1-0 in the Final while Yugoslavia defeated the group runners-up Argentina 4-2 in the Third place match.
Scotland along with Brazil, Czechoslovakia, USSR and Uruguay, originally received a bye to the second round.
