In the run up to the clash in Amsterdam, George Burley had a squad crisis. Firstly McFadden, Robson, and O'Connor did not make the squad through injury. Hartley, Broadfoot, Weir and Commons all withdrew, and McManus was not deemed fit to play in the Dutch clash. McGregor was given the goalkeeper's gloves as Gordon was not getting a game at Sunderland.
The first big chance of the game fell to Scotland, when Darren Fletcher played a great through ball to Miller, who beat the offside trap and was through on goal. A great tackle from Mathijsen prevented Scotland from taking the lead. A great piece of skill by Arjen Robben resulted in McGregor making a great low save with his legs; before the Dutch went ahead on 30 minutes. Van Bommel crossed to the back post for an unmarked Huntelaar to head past McGregor. Things got worse in first half injury time, when a Robben corner was headed in by Van Persie, who had lost his marker. With quarter of an hour remaining, McCormack floated in a corner for Caldwell to head in a powerful header. The referee bizarrely disallowed the goal for no apparent reason. Just to rub salt into the wounds, a few minutes later Berra brought down Huntelaar in the box. From the resulting penalty, Kuyt sent McGregor the wrong way to seal a 3-0 victory for the Dutch.
