Scotland 0-1 Hungary

Going into the Hungary game, Scotland knew a win would all but guarantee a place in the knockout stages. A draw could also still leave a slight chance of qualification.

Scotland started the match having most of the possession (71% after 30 minutes), but offering no threat up front. Hugary had a great chance just before half-time when a header by Orban clipped the crossbar, but it was goalless at half-time. With just over 20 minutes remaining, Hungary floated a ball into the box and Gunn came out to punch the ball away. In the process, contact was made with Varga, and he went down injured. While he received treatment on the pitch for over five minutes and was stretchered off, VAR checked for a possible penalty, but it was waved away. Scotland then made some changes bringing on Armstrong and Shankland, and a dull game burst into life. A few minutes later McTominay played a through ball to Armstrong, who was through on the keeper only to be brought down. It looked like a stonewall penalty and also a possible red card for Orban, but the referee waved it away, and it did not look like there was even a VAR check. The referee indicated there was to be ten minutes added at the end. As Scotland piled more players forward, they were leaving massive gaps at the back. First Gunn made a save from Szoboszlai, then Csoboth hit the post when he should have scored. At the other end, Hanley had a shot saved by the keeper. As Scotland piled everyone forward for a corner, a shot from McGregor was blocked. This left Hungary to break, with the Scotland defence out of position. Sallai make it to the touchline, and played a low ball back to an unmarked Csoboth to hit a low shot past Gunn to give Hungary a winner in the 100th minute. It was a sickening result which sent Scotland out of another finals, after another really poor performance against an average Hungary side. It left many people questioning Steve Clarke's future, and whether he should remain as Scotland manager.
