Following the Germany defeat, Steve Clarke had a big job in picking up the players' self esteem. The two changes were Grant Hanley replacing the suspended Ryan Porteous, and Billy Gilmour replacing Ryan Christie. Scotland made a bright start to the match and took the lead after only 13 minutes. After a Swiss corner, Scotland broke away and Robertson ran to the edge of the box. He laid it off to McGregor, and he put it back into the path of McTominay who hit a low shot that was deflected in to make it 1-0. Switzerland then upped a gear, and 13 minutes later equalised. A poor backpass by Ralston was intercepted by Shaquiri, and he hit an unstoppable shot into the top left corner that beat Gunn. Switzerland then piled on the pressure and Gunn made a save from Ndoye. The same player then had a goal ruled out for offside. In the second half Ndoye should have scored, but Gunn got a hand to his shot to direct it past the post. Midway through the second half, Scotland had a great chance to take the lead. A free-kick on the right was played into the box for Grant Hanley to head against the post, with the keeper beaten. With ten minutes remaining, McTominay had a sweet volley in the box blocked by a defender. Around the 90 minute mark, the Swiss missed a guilt edged chance when they headed just past the post. Up the other end Robertson headed into the middle, but Akanji denied a tap in for McTominay. The match ended 1-1, which was a fair result, and a much better performance from Scotland. Going into the final match, a win against Hungary, barring some unlikely results, would secure qualification for the knock-out stages. A draw could still also secure qualification, but that was unlikely.
