Haiti 0-1 Scotland

In the build up to the opening match, the main worries for Scotland were regarding Scott McTominay, who missed training due to an upset stomach. Scott McKenna also had a calf issue, and he was not available for the match.

Scotland made a positive early start, and after only seven minutes, a good move down the left ended with McTominay heading a Robertson cross over the bar. Ten minutes later Scotland almost took the lead. Gannon-Doak teed up McTominay, and he rattled the right hand post. Just before the half hour mark, Scotland finally made the breakthrough. Adams collected a long ball from Hanley, he layed it off to Gannon-Doak, who crossed into the box where the keeper prevented Adams, before pushing the ball out to McGinn. His shot was deflected into the net to score Scotland's first World Cup goal in 28 years. Haiti were dangerous on the attack and Providence cut inside before his shot was saved by Gunn. Gunn spilled the ball and it needed Hanley to block a shot from Pierrot, but the flag went up anyway. Haiti started to pile on the pressure but their end product was seriously lacking. Ten minutes into the second half, Robertson put a great ball into the box, but Shankland missed it, and Gannon-Doak was blocked at the back post. In the 73rd minute McGinn should have got his second. An attack resulted in Hickey heading a low pass through to McGinn who was through on goal, but he shot wide. With five minutes remaining, Haiti had their big chance to equalise, but Pierrot met a cross from the right with his head, but it was glanced wide. Scotland held on to record their first World Cup win since 1990, but it was a poor performance, and if Haiti had a better attack, it may have been a different scoreline. It was the win that mattered though, and after Brazil and Morocco drew earlier, Scotland were at the top of the group.
