Two days before the play-off, Scotland were hit by Coronavirus. Stuart Armstrong tested positive, and Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney had to isolate with him for 14 days due to their contact with Armstrong. This meant that they were out of the play-off and the Nations League double header.
The game was a dull affair with little chances. The best chance of the first half came five minutes before the break, when an unmarked Scott McTominay headed wide of an open goal, from a Robertson corner. At the start of the second half, Scotland had a penalty claim brushed aside, when the ball hit a defender's arm. After a goalless 90 minutes, the game went into extra time, and five minutes from the end, Israel went so close to breaking the deadlock, when a ball in to the back post was missed by inches by Weissman. Right at the end, a Liam Cooper header hit the post, seconds before the referee blew the final whistle for a penalty shootout.
For the first penalty, up stepped John McGinn who hit a low penalty to the bottom left. Luckily it crept under the keeper's arm to give Scotland a 1-0 lead. Zahavi hit Israel's first penalty, which Marshall dived to his right to save. Callum McGregor put Scotland 2-0 up with a great penalty to the right. Marshall got a hand to Bitton's penalty, but couldn't keep it out, making it 2-1. Scott McTominay squeezed his penalty in to the bottom left corner, making it 3-1. Weissman put it down the middle, while Marshall dived to his left, making it 3-2. Lawrence Shankland put the ball into the bottom left corner, while the keeper dived to the right, making it 4-2. Abu Fani kept Israel in the game by sending Marshall the wrong way. Up stepped Kenny McLean to place the ball to the left and send their keeper the wrong way. This sent Scotland to the Play-Offs Final away to Serbia, after winning the shootout 5-3.
