For the friendly with Austria Alex McLeish recalled Garry O'Connor, who had previously gone AWOL before the match in Ukraine. In the first half Boyd missed two good chances, the first came after a good run and cross by Naysmith. The second came after Ferguson found O'Connor, who laid it off for Boyd. Austria also had a good chance with a Linz header, but it failed to trouble debutant Allan McGregor. In the second half, Gordon replaced McGregor and was immediately called into action with a save from Haas. On the hour mark, O'Connor repaid McLeish's faith and put Scotland ahead. Hartley hit a high ball to Boyd, who knocked the ball into O'Connor's path. He turned Samuel before he drilled a low shot past Payer in the Austrian goal. At the end, Katzer hit the bar with a header from a corner, but Scotland ran out worthy winners.
