Republic of Ireland 1-0 Scotland

For the deciding Carling Cup match, Scotland made four changes with Grant Hanley replacing injured Gary Caldwell. Barry Robson and Phil Bardsley also started along with debutant James Forrest.

Scotland made a bright start with Charlie Adam shooting just over Shay Given's goal and after 18 minutes Phil Bardsley hit a thunderbolt from long range that Shay Given tipped onto the bar. Five minutes later the Republic took the lead when Robbie Keane picked up the ball in his own half and ran towards the Scotland goal before he hit a low shot that went through McGregor's arms. A couple of minutes later Kenny Miller came close to connecting with a Robson cross just six yards out. Just before half time Steven Naismith forced a save from Given but the Irish went into the break ahead. Midway through the second half James Forrest made contact with a Barry Robson cross at the back post, but his volley was wide of the goal. With 15 minutes remaining, Miller controlled the ball in the box before he was pulled down. His penalty claims were waved away by the referee. A few minutes later Miller had a deft flick palmed away by Given. With less than ten minutes remaining Miller had a great chance to level the tie when he was one on one with Given, but his shot went just wide of the post. The match finished 1-0 to Ireland handing them the inaugral Carling Nations Cup.
