Due to the postponement of Scotland's play-off with Ukraine, they agreed to play the loser of the Wales - Austria play-off in a friendly. As Wales won 2-1, Scotland would play Austria in Vienna.
After only two minutes, McGinn had a shot saved from inside the box. A few minutes later Gordon made a save from a Kalajdzic header, before McGinn went up the other end and shot just wide. Gordon was called upon again to make a low save with his leg from a Kalajdzic shot, and a few minutes later, an Arnautovic shot. After 27 minutes, Scotland took the lead. A corner from McGinn was headed onto the bar by Hanley at the back post, and Jack Hendry headed the rebound in. Ten minutes into the second half, Scotland got a second. Robertson played a one-two with Armstrong, before passing to Tierney, who made a run down the wing and played a low ball into the box for McGinn to hit a powerful shot high into the net. With 15 minutes remaining, Austria pulled one back. Ulmer played a deep cross into the box, for Gregoritsch to head it past Gordon. Austria were now on the ascendancy, and with 9 minutes remaining Schopf collected a loose ball on the edge of the box, and hit a low shot through the Scotland defence and past Gordon to make it 2-2. Scotland were now holding on. A couple of minutes later Weimann was through on goal, but his shot was saved by Gordon, as Scotland held on for the draw.
