When the Japan and Ivory Coast squad was named, John McGinn was fit in time. While others weren't, the biggest shock was that Findlay Curtis was in the squad.
Scotland almost took an early lead after seven minutes when McTominay met a McGinn cross, but the keeper touched his shot onto the post. Japan then looked dangerous and seven minutes before half-time, Tanaka hit the bar. Three minutes later Suzuki shot straight at Gunn. On the stroke of half time, McTominay had a header saved by the keeper. In the second half, Robertson made a great run before his low shot was saved. Mitoma also had a shot just wide of Gunn's left hand post. A minute later Gunn made a close range save from Ito. With 20 minutes remaining, McLean made a goal-line clearance from Mitoma. Ten minutes later Hirst came close when he made a great run, but he shot just wide. Five minutes later Japan took the lead When Ito finished off a great move and his shot sent Gunn the wrong way, and his legs could not keep the shot out. It was a deserved win for Japan, but it was a typical dull friendly.
