Following the winning start against Cyprus three days earlier, Steve Clarke made changes with McTominay, Christie and Dykes all starting.
After only seven minutes, Saturday's hero McTominay put Scotland ahead, sending Mount Florida into raptures. Spurs' Pedro Porro slipped on the left of the box, allowing Robertson to collect the ball before he cut it back to McTominay. His low shot took a deflection and beat the keeper. Eight minutes later Christie came close when his shot went just past the right hand post. Midway through the first half, Spain almost equalised when a header by Joselu hit the bar. Rodri then headed just over the bar from a corner. Just before the half hour mark, Gunn had to make a save at the top right hand corner from a shot from outside the box by Porro. In injury time at the end of the first half, Dykes was through on goal but shot just over. Six minutes into the second half, Tierney intercepted a Spanish pass in the Scotland half. He ran down the left hand wing, beating the Spanish players, before he crossed into the box. His cross came off the knee of Garcia falling into the path of the onrunning McTominay, who hit a low volley past Keppa into the left hand side of the net. It sent the Scotland fans into absolute pandemonium, with Scotland now 2-0 up. Six minutes later, Kepa had to claw away a quick free kick that McGinn took. In the last half hour, Spain had chances from Aspas and late on from Pino, but neither troubled Gunn in the Scotland goal. Shankland also had a chance in the final minute of injury time, but his shot was saved. When the referee blew the final whistle, Scotland celebrated a famous victory that put Scotland three points clear at the top ahead of Spain, and five ahead of Norway. After the match Rodri spat his dummy out, blaming Scotland for diving, when it was actually Spain who were doing the diving.
