With Scotland top of Group B, they now faced their toughest task away to the World Champions. At the start of the game Scotland struggled to hold on to possession, and therefore it was not a surprise when Italy took the lead after 12 minutes. Oddo floated a free kick on the right into the box to the head of Luca Toni, who headed it past Gordon. Italy controlled the first half, but Scotland had some chances. The closest was a dipping shot by McCulloch that was saved by Buffon. In the second half Gordon made two saves from Di Natale, the first was a shot from an angle that Gordon saved with his hand; while the second was saved by his leg. Gordon also saved a deflected shot from Camoranesi. With 20 minutes left on the clock, slack passing from Scotland let the Italians get the ball to Camoranesi on the right. He crossed the ball to the back post where Toni escaped from his marker to head in Italy's second. McLeish threw on both Boyd and Beattie in the last ten minutes to play three up front. It was to no avail though as the Italians ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.
