Controversy preceded George Burley's first match as Scotland manager, as four out of five of the Rangers players pulled out of the squad leaving Boyd the only Ger in the squad. McFadden also had to withdraw as he had undergone surgery on an ankle injury at Birmingham City. Burley picked a 4-5-1 formation with Kenny Miller the sole striker. Celtic captain Stephen McManus was given the captain's armband in the absence of Barry Ferguson.

On a night of torrential rain, the game did not start well for Scotland, as only 10 minutes had passed when Croatia took the lead. Niko Kranjcar collected the ball on the edge of the Scotland penalty area, turned and unleashed a powerful shot that deceived Gordon. On the half hour mark Steven Fletcher played a long pass from inside the Scotland half down the left wing, and a slip from Robert Kovac let Kenny Miller through on goal. A shot from a tight angle was deflected past Pletikosa in the Croatia goal to give Scotland an equaliser. In the second half a Kenny Miller header from a Shaun Maloney corner was headed off the line. Following this, a long rang shot from Kranjcar was parried by Gordon, and Gary Caldwell made an excellent point blank tackle to prevent Croatia from scoring a second. At the other end substitute Kris Boyd had a shot well saved by Pletikosa, meaning that the game would finish 1-1.
