Due to the Euro 2020 finals being postponed by a year, the qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup began before the Euro 2020 finals. Scotland's first game was at home to Austria. Steve Clarke recalled Grant Hanley due to his form at Norwich City, and also called up Southampton striker Che Adams, who qualified through his grandparents. Austria on the other hand named a 43 man squad, as there were doubts as to wheather players from the Bundesliga in Germany, would be allowed to travel. Germany then removed Britain from their list of countries needing a 14 day quarantine.
Austria started on the attack, and after only a minute Kalajdzic shot just past the post. Just before half time, the Austrian keeper gifted the ball to Dykes, he passed to Christie, who had a low shot blocked. Ten minutes into the second half, Grillitsch had a long shot from outside the box, which Marshall parried into the path of Kalajdzic to score the rebound. A minute later, Scotland were denied a stone-wall penalty, when Christie was rugby tackled to the ground in the box. Straight after that, Armstrong had a low shot go just wide of the post. With 20 minutes remaining, O`Donnell hit a long high free-kick into the box, for Grant Hanley to lose his marker and head past the keeper and level the scores. Ten minutes later, Austria went back in front when a powerful header from Kalajdzic beat Marshall. With five minutes remaining John McGinn equalised. A cross from Robertson was headed clear, but Christie headed it back into the box for McGinn, who with his back to goal, scored a spectacular overhead kick, to get a 2-2 draw.
