Alex McLeish's first game in charge was at home to Georgia, and the McLeish era got off to a flyer, when after only 11 minutes Scotland took the lead. Teale collected the ball down the left, before he crossed the ball into the middle for Boyd to score a low header into the bottom corner. Scotland had chances to double their lead firstly from Teale and then from Miller. Georgia came into the game towards the end of the half and had a Demetradze volley saved, before Khizanishvilli hit the bar. Georgia got a deserved equaliser 4 minutes before the interval when Demetradze beat Weir on the left to cross the ball into the middle for ex Rangers striker Shota Arveladze to score a diving header. With 20 minutes remaining Miller laid the ball on to Boyd who hit the bar. Boyd was replaced by Beattie with less than 15 minutes remaining, and in the 89th minute Naysmith headed the ball into the box to Miller, who in turn headed the ball into Beattie's path. Beattie hit the ball with what appeared to be his left shin and the keeper got a hand to the ball but couldn't keep it out. It was a vital goal to give Scotland a 2-1 win in McLeish's first match. It put Scotland top of Group B and kept their qualification hopes alive.
