The first game of the season saw South Africa visiting Pittodrie. In the first half Scotland failed to create any good chances. After half an hour, South Africa came close when a cross by Carnell was headed over by Nomvethe. Scotland's only chance of the first half was when McFadden fired a free kick over the bar. With 22 minutes remaining, McLeish made a double change up front bringing on Boyd and Beattie for Miller and O'Connor. Three minutes later one of the substitutions paid off when Fletcher played a great ball over the top to Boyd, who timed his run well before he hit a half-volley into the keeper's left hand side of the net, to give Scotland the lead. With ten minutes remaining Robson clears a header off the line to keep Scotland ahead, and ultimately give Scotland a 1-0 victory.
