Scotland 1-3 Croatia

The day before the deciding match with Croatia, Scotland were dealt a huge blow when Billy Gilmour tested positive for Covid-19, meaning that he would miss the match. Later that day, results went Scotland's way in groups B and C, meaning that victory over Croatia would see Scotland through as at least one of the best third place teams.

Scotland made a positive start, with the boot of Adams close to giving Scotland the lead. After 17 minutes though Croatia silenced the Hampden crowd. Perisic headed the ball down to an unmarked Vlasic in the box, who controlled the ball before knocking it into the bottom corner past Marshall, giving Croatia the lead. A few minutes later, Marshall tipped a powerful shot by Modric just over the bar. Three minutes before half time, Hampden came to life. A loose ball in the Croatia box was cleared, but only to the foot of Callum McGregor on the edge of the box. He hit a low shot into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1. Just before the hour mark, Scotland should have taken the lead when an Armstrong cross was met by McGinn at the back post, but he could not direct the ball on target. A few minutes later, Croatia regained the lead. Kovacic layed the ball off to Modric just outside the box, and he curled the ball into the top corner with the outside of his right boot, to score a stunning goal. With 14 minutes remaining, Croatia got their third. A Modric corner was steered into the net off the back post, by the head of Perisic. It ended Scotland's hopes of progressing past the group stages, but the Scotland fans could look back with pride. Hopefully this would be tha start of qualifying for the finals, and there would not be another 23 year wait.
