Canada took the lead after only 11 minutes, when slack defending led to former Rangers player Fraser Aird slotting the ball past McGregor. A couple of minutes later, Snodgrass almost equalised, when he curled a ball in from the right that went through the whole defence and came back off the post. Canada almost got a second, just before the half hour mark, when Aird was allowed to go on a solo run before he shot just past the post. Oliver Burke made the keeper pull off a save a few minutes later to prevent an equaliser. 10 minutes before half time, Scotland got the equaliser. A Lee Wallace cross was met by Naismith, but the keeper saved his attempt. The rebound came out to Cairney, whose shot was steered into the net by Naismith to make it 1-1. Just after the hour mark, substitute Barry Bannan, had his shot saved, and his follow up went over the bar. With 12 minutes remaining, Fraser Aird made McGregor pull off a great save to keep it at 1-1 in what was a poor performance.
