Scotland 1-2 Wales

Scotland went into Gordon Strachan's first competitive match knowing that they needed a victory to have any chance of qualification. Wales started the much better team and almost took the lead within the first minute. Minutes later Steven Fletcher went off injured to be replaced by Kenny Miller. McGregor then made a double save from Bellamy and Bale. Just before half time, against the run of play Scotland took the lead when a Mulgrew corner was headed in by Grant Hanley. Scotland started the second half much better and were unlucky not to double their lead when a Snodgrass shot came back off the post. Wales then had the ball in the net but the referee blew for a foul on McGregor. With 20 minutes remaining, Scotland's qualification hopes ended in a 3 minute spell. Firstly Snodgrass fouls Gunter in the penalty area to concede a penalty. Snodgrass recieved a second yellow and Aaron Ramsey stepped up to score from the penalty spot and make it 1-1. Things got even worse a minute later when straight from kick-off, Wales took the lead as Robson-Kanu headed in a King cross. In the last minute, Aaron Ramsey received his marching orders for pulling down McArthur to make it 10 v 10. It was too late though as the match ended a humiliating 2-1 defeat, and all but ended Scotland's qualification hopes.
