When the lineup for the Morocco match was named, there were some shocks like the exclusion of Ben Gannon-Doak, plus Kieran Tierney playing further forward, and Che Adams being the sole striker.
The game could not have got off to a worse start as after only 72 seconds Morocco took the lead. A ball over the top from Diaz caught Hanley on the back foot and Saibari shot an unstoppable shot into the top corner to make it 1-0. It left the Scotland fans and team in shock. Ten minutes later, Morocco almost got a second, but their low cross went past the post. Scotland were looking like a deer in headlights. After 20 minutes, a save from Gunn's foot prevented Hakimi making it 2-0. A few minutes later, Morocco were very lucky not to have a player sent off, as Diop, who was the last man, pulled down Adams, who was through on goal. After the half hour mark El Aynaoui shot over the bar when he was through on goal, El Khannouss did likewise. Scotland were lucky not to be 3-0 down. Ten minutes before half time, Scotland began to pick up their game and McGinn latched on to a great cross from Robertson, but he did not get good contact and shot wide. A few minutes into the second half there was massive controversy as McGinn was clearly fouled in the box, but the referee waved away claims, and did not check VAR. Two minutes later, Morocco went up the other end, and Jack Hendry deflected a Saibari shot onto the bar. Just after the hour mark, Christie was through on goal, but he shot over the bar. With ten minutes remaining, there was more controversy as McTominay was fouled in the box. This was not as clear as the McGinn one though. A minute later McTominay was through, but his shot was deflected for a corner. From the resulting corner, McGinn floated one in, but Dykes headed wide. In injury time at the end, Gunn tipped a shot from Talbi over the bar. It meant the match ended in defeat for Scotland, but at the start it looked like it could have been more. Scotland played much better in the second half, and still have a great chance of progressing.
