Following the defeat to Georgia, Scotland had to beat Italy at Hampden in their final game to qualify. A draw would mean that Scotland would need the Ukraine to defeat France in Kiev. The Italy game was built-up to be possibly the biggest match in Scotland's history, with most of the Scotland fans positive that Scotland would get at least a draw. The weather was torrential rain, which probably suited Scotland more than Italy.
The match did not get off to a good start as Italy took the lead after only 70 seconds. An Italian throw in on the left near the touchline went to Di Natale, who passed the ball into the middle for Luca Toni to stab the ball home. Fifteen minutes later a shot by McCulloch played Zambrotta's arm in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on. In first half injury time, a David Weir header was headed off the line by Pirlo. In the 65th minute, a free kick on the edge of the penalty area by McFadden, took a deflection off a defender and fell to McCulloch, whose shot was parried by Buffon. Barry Ferguson prodded home the rebound to give Scotland a deserved equaliser. Scotland were looking for a winner and with ten minutes remaining, McFadden played the one-two with Miller and missed an open goal at the back post, which he was stretching to get. It looked like it was going to finish 1-1 when in injury-time Hutton was barged off the ball near the corner flag, and bizarrely the referee gave the free-kick Italy's way. From the resulting free-kick the ball was crossed into the box for Panucci to chest the ball over Gordon and into the net to give Italy an undeserving 2-1 win, and end Scotland's qualification hopes.
