The build up to the friendly in Turkey was dominated by the decision of Ange Postecoglou to not release any Celtic players. As FIFA had not made it an official International window, Celtic were not obliged to release the players. They had also made plans to play in Australia during the World Cup break.

After 18 minutes, a header from Ozan Kabak hit the bar and Gordon saved the rebound. Twenty minutes later Gordon saved a low shot shot from Eren Elmali. Five minutes before half time, Turkey took the lead. A free kick into the box from Hakan Çalhanoglu was headed past Gordon from Ozan Kabak. Just on half time, Cengiz Ünder almost doubled Turkey's lead, but his shot went wide of the post. Four minutes into the second half, Turkey did double their lead. Scotland were caught on the break and Cengiz Ünder hit a low shot into the bottom left hand corner past Gordon. Just after the hour mark Scotland pulled one back. John McGinn collected the ball inside the Scotland half and ran all the way to the Turkey penalty area, before hitting a great shot past the keeper into the right hand corner. With twenty minutes remaining, Scotland came close to equalising, but Jack Hendry headed over the bar from a corner. With two minutes remaining a great Scotland move ended with Christie shooting just over the bar. It was Scotland's last chance, meaning Turkey would win 2-1.
