Scotland went into this game knowing that they needed a victory to have a realistic chance of qualification. After only two minutes, McGregor had to make a treble save to keep the Belgians out. After 10 minutes he had to make another save from a Chadli shot. Belgium then came close when a Alderweireld cross was punched out by McGregor and the rebound was played in front of goal to Benteke who just failed to head the ball. Midway through the first half, Commons was fouled and the resulting free kick was curled in from Maloney and tipped just past the post. 15 minutes later Dembele came close but his shot went just wide. Five minutes before the break, Commons hit a low free kick that was pushed past the post by the keeper. In the second half, Benteke had a header come off McGregor's crossbar. With less than half an hour remaining, McGregor pulled off another save from a De Bruyne shot. A few minutes later the same man floated a cross to the back post where Benteke headed past McGregor to give the Belgians the lead. A couple of minutes later, their lead was doubled when Company picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and turned McArthur before unleashing a powerful shot past McGregor, to make the score 2-0 and all but end Scotland and Craig Levein's hopes.
