Scotland were looking to record their third consecutive victory for the first time in seven years in a match that would be their last at Hampden Park until after the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In the first half both teams cancelled each other out and the only real chance came for Scotland just before half time.  Snodgrass played the ball through to Fletcher who was through on goal, and instead of shooting, he passed to Conway who came in from the wing but he shot wide.  In the second half Scotland came close when a Snodgrass free-kick was tipped over the bar by Tim Howard.  Just before the hour mark, USA came close when a shot by Jose Altidore went just past the post.  In the final ten minutes the USA came close twice.  Firstly Johannsson picked up a stray ball from Greer and had his low shot saved by Marshall and as the rebound fell to Altidore, Grant Hanley made a goalline tackle to keep the ball out.  A couple of minutes later Johannsson had another shot, this time it went just past the post.  The game therefore finished goalless, which was better than the 5-1 thrashing 18 months ago.
