Going into the opening match of Euro 2024, the big choices that Steve Clarke made were playing Che Adams up front, and leaving out Billy Gilmour for Ryan Christie. Scotland's confidence going into the match was quickly drained after only 10 minutes when Florian Wirtz put the Germans 1-0 up with a low shot from the edge of the box that Gunn got a hand to but couldn't keep out. Nine minutes later the Germans got their second, when Musiala rifled a close range shot into the top of the net. The Scots were getting ripped apart, and the target looked to get to half time without conceding another. A minute before half time things went from bad to worse though as Ryan Porteous conceded a penalty and was sent off for a two footed tackle on Gundogan. Kai Havertz stepped up and sent Gunn the wrong way to make it 3-0. Midway through the second half Fulkrug made it 4-0 by rifling an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Eight minutes later, Fulkrug looked to make it five, but VAR ruled it out for offside. With three minutes remaining there was a slight cheer from the Scots as a header across the goal from McKenna was headed into his own net by Rudiger to make it 4-1. That cheer was short lived though as in the 93rd minute Emre Can made it 5-1 with a low shot from outside the box that beat Gunn. It was a humiliating and demoralising start to Euro 2024 for Scotland, and qualification hopes looked to be in tatters.
