Scotland were full of confidence going into the Ukraine game after defeating the French in Paris. Ukraine needed three points to keep alive their hopes of qualification. In the third minute, Scott Brown was fouled on the right wing; and the resulting free-kick by McFadden was headed home by Kenny Miller at the near post, to give Scotland a great start. Seven minutes later Scotland won a free-kick in a central position. Ferguson passed to McCulloch just inside the box on the left hand side, and he curled the ball into the far corner to give Scotland a 2-0 lead after only 10 minutes. In the 24th minute, a cross was put into the Scotland box, and slack defending let Shevchenko drill the ball into the roof of the net from close range. Three penalty claims then followed. The first one was when Hutton was fouled in the box. Following this, Shevchenko was brought down by Naysmith. And just before half time, McFadden was also brought down by Tymoschuk. The referee dismissed all three claims. The match was decided on the 68th minute when Hutton played a great pass for McFadden to bring down on the edge of the box and drill a low shot in at the keeper's right hand post to give Scotland a 3-1 victory and kill off Ukraine.
