Scotland went into this qualifier against Ireland knowing that a defeat would seriously damage their qualification hopes. After 10 minutes, Steven Fletcher had his shot tipped over the bar. Seven minutes before half time, Marshall tipped a header from Daryl Murphy over the bar. From the resulting corner, Murphy forced Marshall into another save, but the rebound fell to Jonathan Walters who put the ball into the back of the net. He was in an offside position, but the referee awarded the goal. Two minutes into the second half, Shaun Maloney played a one-two with Anya, before his shot was defelcted into the net by John O'Shea to make it 1-1. Two minutes later, Ireland went up the other side, and Marshall had to make another save from Murphy. Shay Given then had to make a save from an Anya cross that was deflected. With 5 minutes remaining, James McLean headed just wide, for the game to finish 1-1.
