After the embarassing 1-1 draw with Lithuania, many felt that the game away to Slovakia was a must win match for Scotland. With 12 minutes on the clock, Steven Fletcher had a great chance to put Scotland ahead, when he was free in the box but headed a Snodgrass ball wide of the left hand post. Two minutes later, David Marshall saved a shot from outside the box by Jan Durica. After 18 minutes, Slovakia took the lead. Jakub Holubek crossed the ball from the left to the back post, for Marek Hamsik's header to be saved by Marshall, but the rebound was fired into the net by Robert Mak. It looked like Steven Fletcher was fouled at the start of the move, but the referee played on. Two minutes later, Scotland almost equalised when a low shot by Snodgrass was saved at the left hand side of the goal. Five minutes before half time, Marshall made a great save from a Robert Mak shot from outside the box. From the resulting corner, Marshall made another save from Jan Durica. 11 minutes into the second half, Slovakia made it two. Jakub Holubek cut the ball back to Robert Mak, who side stepped Russell Martin and slotted the ball past Marshall. After 65 minutes, Barry Bannan had a shot saved after a Paterson throw in. Three minutes later, Adam Nemec made it 3-0 after he headed in a corner from Robert Mak. With 12 minutes remaining, substitute Leigh Griffiths shot wide past the right hand post, after he latched on to a pass from John McGinn. A minute later, Griffiths had a shot saved from the right hand side. With nine minutes remaining Barry Bannan also had a shot saved after a cross from Anya. It was another poor performance from Scotland, who travelled to Wembley next.
