Pressure was mounting on Burley going into the Iceland game, nothing more than a win would be good enough. He started with an attacking 4-3-3 formation, with Commons and Maloney supporting McFadden. Rangers' Kirk Broadfoot made his international debut. The game started with Iceland having a few good chances but poor finishing and a good save from Gordon kept it goalless. As Scotland began to control the possession, they took the lead after 18 minutes. Robson curled in a corner from the right, for Broadfoot to run in and score a low header. Scotland had alot of possession down the left wing through Maloney, but Scotland failed to add to their lead. After almost an hour, McFadden was brought down in the penalty area, and the ref pointed to the spot. Up stepped McFadden, and a poor penalty was palmed away by the Icelandic keeper, only for both McFadden and Robson to follow in the rebound and put Scotland 2-0 ahead. It appeared to be McFadden who got the final touch, but it is disputed. Scotland were cruising at this point and looked to be heading for a comfortable victory. That all changed in the 77th minute, when a deliberate handball by McManus resulted in a penalty for Iceland, and a red card for the captain. Gudjohnsen sent Gordon the wrong way to give Iceland a lifeline. The remaining 13 minutes was backs to the wall football with 10 men behind the ball. Scotland held on though to give George Burley his first victory.
