Following Gordon Strachan's departure, Malky Mackay took charge as caretaker manager for Holland's visit. He gave debuts to Ryan Jack, Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor, and made Kieran Tierney captain. After only 8 minutes Scotland came close, but Matt Phillips, followed by James Forrest had their shots blocked. A few minutes later Tierney played a long ball up to Phillips who had his shot saved. Nine minutes before half time, Tierney hit a long range shot that was parried by the Dutch keeper. Four minutes later, Scotland were on the attack when they lost possession. The Dutch broke away and Babel crossed the ball into the box for Memphis Depay to knock it in at the back post and give the Dutch a half time lead. At the start of the second half, John McGinn had a shot go just past the post. With just over 20 minutes remaining, Callum McGregor recieved a through ball from John McGinn, and his shot produced another save from the Dutch keeper. Five minutes later Ryan Fraser cut in from the right and his low shot went just wide. The Dutch held on for a 1-0 win, but Scotland had their chances to get at least a draw.
