In the build up to the final group match, Gordon was withdrawn due to injury meaning Marshall would be in goals. Davidson, Alexander and Steven Fletcher were also injured.
The Dutch made a positive start with Kuyt hitting the post after 3 minutes. Scotland came back though and five minutes later a Hutton cross was narrowly hit past the post by Brown. Marshall then made saves from Sneijder and Van Persie. Scotland hit back, and a shot by Miller hit the bar after 30 minutes. Less than 10 minutes later Naismith hit the post before Vorm recovered to make a point blank save from Miller. At the start of the second half Kuyt headed over from close range and Marshall saved from Robben. With 20 minutes remaining Miller went close when his shot spun off the keeper's hands to go just wide. Ten minutes later the Dutch broke the deadlock. A clearance from inside the Dutch half caught David Weir flat-footed and his header fell into the path of Elia who rounded Marshall and beat Hutton on the line to score. With five minutes remaining Garry O'Connor tried to lob Vorm, but his attempt went just wide for the match to finish 1-0 and end Scotland's qualification hopes. To make things worse, Norway had defeated Macedonia, meaning that they would leapfrog Scotland into second place. If only Scotland had played this way in their previous matches.
