Following the promising start away to Denmark, Scotland travelled to Hungary to play Belarus behind closed doors. Due to their support for Russia, UEFA had banned Belarus from playing any games at home, and they also banned any fans.

After only 15 minutes, Gilmour went down in the box, but the referee waved away penalty claims. A few minutes later Gilmour had a low shot saved by the keeper. Just before the half hour mark, McTominay got on to the end of a Johnston cross, but he stabbed it wide. Five minutes before half time Scotland got a scare, when slack defending led Ebong to go through on Gunn, but he blocked the shot from a tight angle. A couple of minutes later, Gilmour had a low shot tipped onto the post. Scotland then took the lead when McGinn played a ball to the back post for McTominay to head across goal. Che Adams then slid in at the near post to break the deadlock. Five minutes into the second half, Belarus were lucky not to see red when Ferguson suffered a bad tackle. A McGinn cross was then met by the head of McTominay, but his header went straight to the keeper. In the 65th minute Scotland got their second. Gilmour played a one-two with Adams, and headed the ball across goal towards McTominay, but Volkov headed it into his own net. With 9 minutes remaining, Robertson made a great run down the left and played a great ball across goal for Adams, but he took a touch and rounded the keeper before his shot was cleared off the line. He would have probably scored if he had shot first time. It was a dominant display in an awkward match, and that put Scotland joint top with Denmark.
