Scotland returned to Estadio da Luz for the first time since a 5-0 thrashing that ended a manager and a team in 1993, Steve Clarke was hoping for not the same thing.
Scotland got off to the best start possible when they took the lead after only seven minutes. A top quality ball into the box from Kenny McLean met the head of McTominay, who snuck past the Portuguese defence and headed past Costa. Gunn then made a low save from a Leão shot just before the 20 minute mark. Jota then had two great chances. The first one he put the ball over the bar, and then ten minutes later Gunn pulled off a save from close range. Nine minutes into the second half, Portugal got their equaliser. Leão passed to Bruno Fernandes, who hit a low shot from just outside the box into the bottom right hand corner, that Gunn should have saved. With 12 minutes remaining, Gunn made up for that when he made a point blank block from a Joao Félix shot. A few minutes later Gunn made another great save from a Joao Félix header, and after a Ronaldo header hit the post, Gunn made a great save again, pushing the ball away when Joao Félix was about to head into an empty net. With two minutes remaining, Ronaldo broke Scotland's hearts. Mendes played a great low cross to the back post, where Ronaldo tapped it in to make it 2-1 to Portugal. It was another cruel end for Scotland in a match where Scotland deserved to get a point.
