In the first qualifier of the season Scotland welcomed a Lithuania side with six Hearts players in their squad. McLeish played a 4-4-2 with Boyd and O'Connor up front. Scotland's first good opportunity came after 19 minutes when a corner by Fletcher was headed by O'Connor and directed on target by Boyd, for their keeper to touch it onto the bar. McCulloch headed the rebound but the keeper made a second save. Scotland made the breakthrough just after the half hour, when O'Connor was fouled on the right wing. Fletcher took a quick free kick, which was floated into the box for Boyd to score a diving header. The free kick was taken so quick that McLeish missed the goal. The Lithuanians had spent the whole game diving and trying to con the referee, and just after the hour mark it paid off when Hearts' player Mikoliunas had a blatant dive in the penalty area and the referee gave them a penalty kick. Danilevicius scored the resulting penalty kick. With 20 minutes remaining a great header by McManus almost put Scotland ahead, but for a fine save by Karcemarskas. In the 77th minute a corner by Fletcher was passed to substitute Maloney, and with his first touch of the ball he floated in a cross to the back post that was half-volleyed in by McManus with his knee. Six minutes later McFadden killed the tie, when he collected the ball out on the right wing and took it past two defenders and unleashed a great shot from the edge of the penalty area that went into the top corner, to give Scotland a deserved 3-1 win.
