After two victories against weaker opposition, now came the big test, France at Hampden. The last game between both countries ended in a 5-0 defeat for Scotland in Paris. After only 11 minutes France came close when a curling free kick by Henry hit the post. France then had the ball in the net twice, but the linesman's flag saved Scotland. The first was a header by Viera, and the second was an overhead kick by Trezeguet. Gordon saved a shot by Malouda on 30 minutes as the French continued to dominate play. In the second half, Scotland got a rare chance when McFadden nipped in behind the French defence but he miss hit his shot wide. In the 67th minute the unthinkable happened. Against the run of play Scotland took the lead. A corner by Hartley on the right was swung into the box for Gary Caldwell to slide in past Coupet and send Hampden, and all of Scotland into a state of jubilation. France piled everyone forward looking for an equaliser, and with only three minutes remaining Henry had a great chance to equalise, but his header was straight at Gordon. The Scotland defence held out, and the full time whistle blew to record arguably their greatest result to date, and send shockwaves throughout the football world.
