Scotland 1-2 Russia

Scotland went into the home tie with Russia knowing that it was a must win, to have a realistic chance of automatic qualification. Scotland went straight on the attack from kick-off, with McGinn shooting just wide. After nine minutes, O'Donnell hit the post after McTomminay headed down a corner from Fraser. A minute later Scotland's pressure paid off. Fraser crossed the ball into the box, and the keeper spilled the ball out to McGinn, who slotted the ball home and give Scotland a 1-0 lead. Just after the quarter hour mark, Marshall had to make a save at the other end, tipping a header from Dzyuba over the bar. Five minutes before half time, Russia equalised. Poor defending in the box let the ball fall to Dzyuba, who hit a low shot past Marshall. Just before the hour mark Ionov played a great ball through to Golovin. He cut the ball back for Zhirkov, but Stephen O'Donnell knocked the ball past Marshall for an own goal. Five minutes later Russia were close to a third, when a downward header by Fernandes was touched onto the bar by Marshall. That was followed by a defected shot by Ionov hitting the outside of the post. On 71 minutes a free kick by Mulgrew went just past the post. At the other end Marshall made a diving save from a Zhirkov shot. With two minutes remaining, Mulgrew made a goalline clearance, as the game ended 2-1 to Russia, making automatic qualification an uphill struggle.
