Scotland 1-0 Lithuania

Scotland went into the Lithuania match with a weakened team as Miller and Brown were both suspended and Hutton was not fit enough. The big dilemma was who would play up front, and Levein chose David Goodwillie to win his second cap.

Scotland started the game well on top of Lithuania and after only 15 minutes a Bannan corner was headed on to Berra, but he scooped the ball over the bar. A couple of minutes later Don Cowie blazed a shot over the bar after some good build up play from Scotland. With only seven minutes left of the half, Fletcher went on a run on the left that ended in him checking in and unleashing a shot at the near post that was saved. A Bannan corner was then headed just over by Naismith. A minute before half time a Bannan free kick was floated into the box only for it to be handled by the defender. This time the referee pointed to the spot. As both Miller and Adam were missing up stepped Fletcher, but he had a poor penalty saved by the keeper. Five minutes into the second half Scotland took the lead. Bannan played a great ball into the box for Naismith to time his run brilliantly and put the ball in off the post on the half volley. With 15 minutes left on the clock Scotland should have had another penalty when Lithuania again handled the ball in the penalty area. With the loose ball Naismith could have doubled his goal tally but he headed another Bannan cross over the bar. A few minutes later Lithuania could have scored but a Danilevicius header went just wide. Scotland then just played down the clock to record a vital 1-0 win which left Scotland with a small chance of qualifying.
