Going into the friendlies against Iceland and Liechstenstein, Scotland had a weakened squad, particularly in goal. Gordon, Kelly and Clark were all injured, leaving Gunn as the only capped keeper. Robby McCrorie and Cieran Slicker were added to the squad. In the warm-up, things did not go well as McCrorie got injured.
At the start of the match, things got even worse as after only six minutes, Gunn was taken off injured to be replaced by uncapped Slicker, who had only played 10 minutes for Ipswich all season. A minute later, he was picking the ball out of the net. In his first involvement, he made a poor clearance that was intercepted by Thórdarson and headed through to Gudjohnsen. He hit a great shot from just outside the box that beat Slicker and gave Iceland the lead. At the other end Hirst headed a cross from McGinn just over the bar. He also had a shot tipped over the bar by the keeper. From the resulting corner, Max Johnston floated the ball into the box for John Souttar to head a low ball past the keeper for the equaliser after 25 minutes. In the last minute of the first half, Iceland regained the lead after some calamitous defending from a corner, led to the ball deflecting off Ferguson, and Slicker let it creep into the bottom corner. Things got worse seven minutes into the second half when Gudmundsson floated a free kick from far out, into the box and Palsson's header went through Slicker's hands to make it 3-1. There were some VAR checks that may have saved Scotland, but the goal stood. Ten minutes later Scotland looked to have pulled one back. A shot by McTominay was parried by the keeper, and Hirst tapped in the rebound. It was ruled out by VAR though as replays showed that McTominay was offside. The game played out, with Scotland showing a lack of ambition to get something, something that needs to improve before the World Cup campaign. As for Slicker, he couldn't have asked for a worse debut. At least it was only a friendly.
