Scotland went into the match with some renewed optimism after the appointment of Gordon Strachan as manager. It was also a coincidence that his first match in charge also took place at the ground where he played for seven years. After only three minutes, Maloney had a volley saved by the keeper after an inswinging corner was punched out by the keeper and headed back in by Burke to fall for Maloney. After 10 minutes, McGregor was called into action when he had to tip a shot by Teniste over the bar. 10 minutes later a great passing move by Scotland ends with a cross by Burke headed over by Steven Fletcher. Just before half time, Maloney was fouled on the left. Adam played the resulting free kick to the foot of Mulgrew, who played a low shot past the keeper to give Scotland a 1-0 lead. Just before the hour mark, Jordan Rhodes had a shot go over the bar, and soon after Naismith also had a shot go just over. Scotland comfortably played out the rest of the match, with the game ending in victory for Gordon Strachan's first game in charge.
