Prior to the Holland match that would be played in the Algarve, Scotland had travelled to a training camp in Spain. The day before the match, John Fleck had tested positive for Covid-19, meaning he had to self isolate. For extra precautions, another six players would not travel for the Holland game. David Marshall, Stephen O`Donnell, Nathan Patterson, Grant Hanley, John McGinn, and Che Adams all tested negative, but Steve Clarke did not want to take any chances. It was still a fairly strong Scotland team, but both Scott McTomminay and the uncapped Billy Gilmour, who met up with the squad later, would be on the bench.
Scotland made a strong positive start to the game, and attacked the Dutch. This payed off, when Scotland took the lead after 11 minutes. Jack Hendry picked up the ball just ouside the box, and he drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner. A minute later, Lyndon Dykes should have make it two when he was through on goal, but his shot was saved by Krul. Five minutes later, Holland equalised. Some slack defending by Scotland left Memphis Depay unmarked in the box, and he volleyed a Wijnaldum header low past Gordon. Just after the hour mark, Scotland turned defence into attack. Robertson, headed a Dutch attack clear to Armstrong. He passed to Christie, who fed Robertson down the wing. Robertson played a great low cross to the back post, for substitute Kevin Nisbet to knock the ball past Krul and give Scotland a 2-1 lead. Five minutes later, Turnbull should have made it three, but his shot went just over. With 10 minutes remaining, Gordon had to pull off a great save from a deflected shot by van Aanholt, to keep it at 2-1. A minute from time, Holland won a dubious free-kick on the edge of the box. Up stepped Depay to place the ball into the far corner past Gordon, and give Holland a 2-2 draw.
