With the conflict in Ukraine, there was a possibility that Scotland would get a bye, but in the end the match was rearranged for June, with the winner playing Wales four days later. It was an emotional night for Ukraine, who were more up for the match than Scotland, with most of the western world supporting them.
Ukraine almost took the lead after seven minutes when a Tsygankov shot was tipped over by Gordon. Gordon was then called upon again to make a close range save from Yarmolenko. Just after the half hour mark, Malinovskyi played a long ball over the top to Yarmolenko, who controlled the ball before lobbing Gordon, to give Ukraine the lead. Just into the second half, Ukraine got a second. Karavaev crossed the ball into the box for Yaremchuk to place a downward header past Gordon. A few minutes later, Gordon had to make a low save for a shot by Yarmolenko. Scotland then came close when McGregor closed down the keeper whose clearance was deflected off McGregor just past the post. Midway through the second half Scotland came so close when a header by McGinn went just past the post. With 11 minutes remaining, a deflected shot by McGregor crept over the goalline to make it 1-2 and give Scotland some hope. Scotland were then piling forward looking for an equaliser, but in the 95th minute, Ukraine broke away. With most of the Scotland players at the other end, Dovbyk was through one on one with Gordon, and he slotted it past Gordon to make it 1-3, and end Scotland's World Cup hopes.
